And Isaac his father said unto him, Who art thou? And he said, I am thy son, thy firstborn Esau. And Isaac trembled very exceedingly, and said, Who? where is he that hath taken venison, and brought it me, and I have eaten of all before thou camest, and have blessed him? yea, and he shall be blessed. And when Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry, and said unto his father, Bless me, even me also, O my father. And he said, Thy brother came with subtilty, and hath taken away thy blessing. And he said, Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me? Genesis 27:32-36

Isaac has just been deceived by Jacob and Isaac blessed Jacob, thinking that Jacob was his son Esau. Jacob steals the birthright by fraud, rather than by trusting in the belief that God would give him the real birthright. Jacob has not entered into recovery yet but the principles are waiting for him when he is hurting enough. Isaac and Esau are distressed at the deceit practiced by Jacob, and by his mother. The both agree that Jacob is rightly named – a supplanter – or a deceiver. Jacob had indeed stolen the birthright, and Esau’s blessing. Jacob desperately needs recovery.
Prayer for Today: God, we all have done what Jacob did, but each of us in our own way. We need Your help, today, as always. Help us to accept that You have a plan to redeem us from sin, and from each and every addiction we have developed. We need Your help. Help us to watch the story of Jacob and help us to grasp hope from his experiences with you. Thank You for Your love for us.
