And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon. And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife. And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife: and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her. And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us. And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death. Genesis 26:7-11

Isaac’s father Abraham had said the same thing in Genesis 12:13-15; 20:1-7. It is almost as if the genetic coding of father and son were tied together. God speaks of this in His law in Exodus 20:5. Isaac knew how to do the same sin as his father had done. He was afraid that God would not take care of him and he lied to assist himself rather than trusting God to take care of him.
Prayer for Today: God, You know we have lied a million times, and often when we did not even need to. We lie over anything that may cause trouble for us. Help us today to learn how to trust in Your ability to take care of us. Grant us the gift of knowing Your will and the gift of trusting in Your will before we can even see all of it. You love us and You will care for us.
