Rehoboam – King of Judah

So king Rehoboam strengthened himself in Jerusalem, and reigned: for Rehoboam was one and forty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the LORD had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there. And his mothers name was Naamah an Ammonitess. And he did evil, because he prepared not his heart to seek the LORD. II Chronicles 12:13-14

Steps: 4-5

After David and Solmon the kings of Judah began a roller coaster ride. Each new king would decide whether to follow God or to follow Baal. Solomon had been wonderfully devoted to God and then lost his hold on God and then in the end repented. Solomon’s son did evil because he had not prepared his heart to seek the Lord. Rehoboam’s father Solomon did not help his son much, and Rehoboam’s mother was one of those who helped turn the heart of Solomon away from God, and she did the same for her son as well. Judah did not look good during the reign of her first king after the great schism.

Prayer for Today: God help us to learn the lessons we read about in Your Word. We see characters like David, Solomon, and now Rehoboam and we see many characteristics that remind us of ourselves. Help us to learn the lessons that these men learned, or failed to learn, and help us not to repeat the errors but to hold on to the truth. Save us from ourselves.
