The Authority of the Word of Christ

And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days. And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power. And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not. And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out. And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about. Luke 4:31-37

After leaving Nazareth Jesus went to Capernaum and began to teach the people on the Sabbath days. During one of His meetings a man which had the spirit of a devil in him started distracting the people by stating that he knew that Jesus was the Holy One of God. To protect the people from not hearing His teaching Jesus rebuked the demon and told him to hold his peace and come out of the man. When the people saw the power of Jesus’ word they were amazed that anyone could do that and help people in such a manner. As a result of this His fame spread throughout the countryside and many came to Him seeking help with their problems.

Prayer for Today: We pray God that You will send us people who know the answers to our problems and who will share their experience strength and hope with us. We need much help and we thank You that You have delivered people and that they can be of assistance to us. Help us to recognize them when they arrive and help us to be willing to surrender to Your counsel through them. Thank You for taking the initiative with us, and by sending people who know what we are experiencing. We want Your help and help us to accept Your help. Help us not to turn away from You in whatever form You may show up in help us to recognize that it is You who sent the help.
