And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear. Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy fathers household, home unto thee. And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him. And if thou utter this our business, then we will be quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear. And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window. Joshua 2:17-21

Before entering into Canaan, Joshua, the leader of Israel who replaced Moses, sends spies into the land and especially into Jericho, the nearest and largest city nearest to the crossing point. The spies are rescued by Rahab, a Canaanite prostitute. After diverting soldiers seeking to capture the spies, Rahab asks for protection when Israel comes into Canaan. The spies tell her that if she puts out a red cord, a symbol of the shed blood of Jesus, out her window then anyone who is in her home can expect to be protected by the Israelites when they take possession of the land. When all was done, she was protected, and we do not know exactly how many of her family and friends were saved, but all who came in by faith, were saved by the blood and by the promise. Rahab also ends up being a great grandmother of Jesus, the Messiah.
Prayer for Today: God we do not know what kinds of crises we will face in the near future but when our time comes give us the courage and wisdom of Rahab to recognize a crisis and to respond in the wisest way possible. Thank You that You would bless and save this lady and her family. It gives us hope that You will rescue us as well.
