The Brothers Tell A Lie

And they took Joseph’s coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood; And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son’s coat or no. And he knew it, and said, It is my son’s coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces. And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days. And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him. Genesis 37:31-35

Joseph’s brothers have sold him to the Ishmeelites who sell Joseph to a rich man in Egypt. Now they have to cover their tracks and lie to their father. They kill a goat and dip Joseph’s coat into the blood to deceive their father about their addictive behaviors. They feel bad but not bad enough to confess and repent. But God still has His plans and they will continue to unfold.

Prayer for Today: God, even when everything blows up, help us to remember that You still are in control. You know what You are doing and Your plans ever unfold in accordance with Your will. Help us today to be willing to surrender to Your plans and to cooperate with You. Thank You for not giving up on us and thank You for Your special care for us, even when we are in rebellion. Help us to allow You to bring us out of the captivity of rebellion into the freedom of surrender.
