God Tells Jacob to Go Into Egypt

And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac. And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I. And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation: I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes. Genesis 46:1-4

Steps: 11, 12

Jacob has learned his lessons well. Even though it seems obvious to go to Egypt to meet with his long lost son, the first thing Jacob does is seek out the will of God. He has been through enough to know that his judgment is always poor and that his only point of safety is to follow the will of God. He asks for God’s thinking and God tells him to go to Egypt and that God will bless him, and his family, there. Jacob’s family will become great nation. God also promises to bring them out again and return them to Canaan. With these assurances Jacob is ready to go.

Prayer for Today: Help us again to learn from Jacob that no matter how self-evident something appears, the safest way to go is to check it out with God through prayer and meditation. Help us to come to You for Your guidance and Your blessings. Help us to learn finally that our only hope is in You.
